Hospital profits edged up in 2025. David Williams is quoted in the Boston Globe

Hospital profitability improved in Massachusetts on average in 2025 but was still not robust. This is despite a significant increase in revenue over 2024. Massachusetts hospital systems improved their bottom lines in 2025, but some still reported major losses includes commentary from David Williams.

David E. Williams, president of Health Business Group, a Boston management consulting firm, said that while hospitals are showing improved margins, “if you take out the money they make from investments, the median system is just breaking even on their main business of patient care.”

He also noted that more than a quarter of acute hospital health systems had negative total margins.

“That still shows a system that’s not so healthy,” Williams said.
