Take that, pill splitters!

Some insurance companies encourage members to split pills in half in order to reduce costs, and some self-pay consumers do the same thing. Since a 100 mg pill usually costs about the same as the 50 mg pill, so it can be a good deal. Drug companies hate the idea, of course, and claim that it's a dangerous practice, but it's hard to stop people from doing it.I heard recently about a new version of AIDS drug Kaletra that is so hard it is virtually unsplittable. Maybe there's a clinical advantage to the new formulation that relates to its hardness, but I can't help but thinking Abbott may also have pill splitters in mind.
